Sadly, the highway fatalities of 2017 in our area continue this new year with the first fatality on Wednesday, January 3 at 7:01 a.m., north of Highway 162. A head-on collision was reported with a 37 year old female of Los Molinos driving northbound crossing the center line for unknown reasons colliding with another vehicle driven by a 52-year-old woman resulting in the 37-year-old's fiance succumbing to his injuries at the scene. Both lanes of the highway were closed for the investigation. The 37-year-old woman was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
The 52-year-old woman was life flighted with major injuries. Highway 99 was closed in both directions for approximately four hours.
Friday morning, January 5, 2018, just before 6 a.m., a head-on collision between three vehicles was reported five miles from Wednesday's crash near Hamilton Road. Highway 99 was closed in both directions for nearly five hours.
It was reported that the Honda had been reported stolen by the Oroville Police Department and the driver of the Honda had been driving erratically southbound and was killed at the scene. A northbound vehicle, with the driver noticing the headlights of the Honda coming towards him veered to avoid a collision but was side-swiped by the Honda.
A red SUV, towing a car in the southbound lane was then hit head-on by the Honda. Previously in the morning, around 1:30 a.m., Chico police had been engaged in a pursuit with the Honda when they ended the pursuit for the safety of others. The highway was re-opened by 11 a.m.
California Highway Patrol officers are investigating both fatal accidents.
