The Gridley High School cross country team is making strides as the end of the season beckons, and coach Steve Allard likes his team’s chances at the upcoming league and section meets.
On Wednesday, the Bulldogs hosted meet at the Butte County Fairgrounds.
The Bulldogs finished third in the team standings with 77 points. Sutter was second with 34 and Orland won the meet with 21.
“We’re trying our best to crack that top two,” Allard said.
The top varsity finisher for another week in a row for the 3-mile flat course was Wheatland's CJ Duncan (17:13) followed by Orland's Angel Garcia (17:30), Chris Garcia (17:49), Sutter's Bailey Rockholt (18:16) and Braedyn Hick (18:21) rounding out the top 5. The Trojans finished in the next three positions, Joel Solis (18:42), Jonatha Mercado (18:43), Aaron Punzo (18:59) while Raymond Baldez (19:16) and Stuart Simpson of the Huskies finished the top ten with 19:21.
The host team saw the fastest finisher for the Bulldogs, Damien Mendoza (20:02) place 13th overall. Other Gridley boys competing were Daniel Perez (20:32), Kevin McCormick (21:03), Jared Pratt (22:14), Armando Garcia (22:37), and Joseph Pawek (25:21).
Allard said his team is coachable and working hard.
