There is a real gem, with many free treasures just east of town on Humble Avenue next to the Christian Life Assembly of God. A group of very caring generous ladies run Compassion Plus Closet where no questions are asked of the people who want to come pick out some clothing or maybe receive a bag of free food once a month.
The racks are overflowing, the tables at their limit with a storage room full of boxes to be be unpacked. The items vary from newborn to seniors and donations are gladly accepted. One room even has housewares to choose from.
Since May, the closet is open the second Thursday of the month from 10 a.m., to noon currently but organizers are willing to open more as the need rises. They are also open the last Saturday of the month from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. when they serve a free dinner at the church from 4 to 6 p.m. This free dinner has been offered the past year and everyone is welcome.
The annual free coat give-away has evolved to this great offering for those in need and donations are appreciated.
Though the free clothes can be obtained anytime, a big bag of free food is available once a month and will usually include canned vegetables, pasta, bread and a protein of some kind. Names are obtained only to keep track of how may items they have sent out for restocking. While in season, vegetables were distributed to those visiting because of a huge garden in the backyard of the mobile home that houses the closet next to the church.
