It took a little longer than expected, but the Gridley High School football team finally got to play its first game of the season earlier this week.

The Bulldogs rolled to a 43-7 win over Willlows on the road Tuesday night.

It was the first head coaching win for new Gridley head coach Matt Kemmis.

“The guys were ready to play,” Kemmis said.

The game was postponed last Friday night due to the heat and poor air quality.

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start in this one. They trailed the Honkers, 7-6 at halftime.

But Gridley exploded to life in the second half, with 37 unanswered points.

Jace Villapania, the Bulldogs’ senior leader and quarterback, led the way for Gridley with 162 yards on 23 carries with three TDS. Jorge Moran added 101 yards on 20 carries with a TD.

Kemmis said the Bulldogs’ offense will make use of Villapania’s athleticism whenever possible.

“He’s a true dual threat,” Kemmis said.

Gridley will travel to Anderson tonight and in other games Live Oak hosts Hamilton and Biggs travels to Mount Shasta,.
