The Gridley Bulldogs girls varsity basketball team came out ready to play in the first half against the visiting Wheatland Pirates Tuesday night at Farmers Hall, but were unable to keep up the pace, eventually falling 50-42 in Butte View League action at Farmers Hall.
After a defensive minded first quarter which saw Gridley gain an 8-6 advantage, the action exploded into a full-court up-and-down game in the second. Gridley was paced by the shooting of Megan Anthony, who scored seven first half points, and Alexa Garcia and Ashley Gallian, who tallied six points each.
The Bulldogs offense really clicked in the second half, as Anthony converted Pirate turnovers into lay-ups, Garcia drained two three-point baskets, and Gallian consistently won the battle on the boards inside. The pace of play seemed perfect for Gridley, who played one of their best quarters of the season to take a 27-23 halftime lead.
Gridley looked to take control early in the second half, and when Gallian scored on the Bulldogs first possession of the third quarter, and was fouled in the process to make it a three point play, it appeared it was going to be smooth sailing for Gridley.
However, over the next few minutes, the play on the floor became very sloppy, with both teams turning the ball over against the others full court pressure. Neither team was able to attempt shots for a few minutes as the ball was constantly being thrown out of bounds, or was being stolen.
In the second half however, the officials began calling many more fouls, whether trying to calm the players down, or just seeing the game differently. The result was a lack of flow in the contest, with whistles for fouls becoming the norm, and the game lost its end-to-end pace, and became a disjointed, ragged affair.
