On April 13, 2017, at approximately 2:35 p.m., the California Highway Patrol was notified of a collision between a Dodge Ram pickup truck and a big rig on Highway 70 just south of Arjay Ranch Road. From evidence and statements obtained on the scene, CHP ascertained that the driver, Alexander Vega, 21, of Gridley was traveling northbound in a Dodge Ram pickup on Highway 70 just south of Arjay Ranch Road and for an unknown reason failed to slow or stop for traffic stopped ahead and collided with the rear of the big rig, succumbing to his injuries.

The driver of the big rig, Roberto Zarcoramirez, 29, of Live Oak sustained minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital.

Information gathered at the scene indicated that Vega was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. It was also determined that had the seatbelt been properly utilized, Vega would have likely survived.

The investigation is on-going but alcohol or drugs are not suspected as a contributing factor at this point. It is unknown if distracted driving played a role in the collision. Any witnesses to this collision are encouraged to call the CHP at 538-2700 with any information they may have regarding this collision.
