The phrase "to know them was to love them" could not be more true as we think of the passing of Mel McLaughlin.

His constant smile and twinkle in his eye will never be forgotten and the thousands of people who called him friend will always remember the words of encouragement he so quickly gave.

Many marvel at the way Mel never forgot a face, no matter how long it had been since he had had that student in school.

McLaughlin Gym will forever be known as one of his favorite places as generations continue to play basketball there for years to come.

To those who might not know Mel, it would be obvious the amount of respect and esteem the town holds for him when they hear the events and gymnasium that are named in his honor.

Each December the Biggs Girls Basketball teams hold the annual Mel McLaughlin Tournament. (This last December was the 33rd annual.)

The Annual Mel McLaughlin Wolverine Golf Classic is held each July in Chico and Mel was always very involved in the planning.

When asked if golf was his favorite sport he claimed it was basketball that he loved the most.

Mel was a driving force for the annual Hometown Celebration featuring fireworks each July 4 and his voice could be heard announcing the parade entrants as they went by.

He served as a board member of the Orchard Hospital Foundation for many years, always enthusiastic to help with their annual golf tournament.

Following his retirement from Biggs High School Mel chose to continue to share his talents at Oroville Adult School for several years

His accomplishments are endless and bring many great memories for those who had him first as a coach, as a friend, we all loved him, we are all better for knowing him.

We miss you already Mr. Wolverine, Mr. Biggs, our friend.
