The Gridley AAUW, is once again able to offer entering 8th grade girls the unique opportunity to attend a California AAUW Tech Trek Math/Science Summer Camp, located for the second year at UCDavis.   Twenty-one area girls were nominated by their science teachers, wrote topic essays and were interviewed by an AAUW committee.

For the first time, scholarship funds were available to send five area girls to Davis for a week in July:  Yasmeen Alfaqeeh, Sycamore Middle School; Mackenzie Rogers, Manzanita Elementary;  Courtney Thompson, Biggs Elementary;  Eden Cuevas, Live Oak Middle School; JulieAnna Martinez, Encinal Elementary.

AAUW began this popular program in 1998 with aims to encourage girls to attend college and to consider careers in science, math, engineering or technology.   The first week-long, camp was held at Stanford University and at present there are nine camps in California.  Because of the success of this program in encouraging girls to attend college in the science/tech fields, California AAUW is  being asked to help set up camps in other states.

The girls will have the opportunities to attend science/technology classes taught by professionals, to create a number of hands-on projects, to take field trips, to listen to speakers and to experience the college life.

A special thanks goes to FOCUS of Gridley, Live Oak Lions, and several personal/business for their donations; helping to make this great experience possible for these five local girls.
