The Gridley Barbarian Youth Rugby Club kicked off its inaugural season on Saturday, January 4 by hosting the Sierra Foothill Youth Rugby Club for a scrimmage. The Barbarians began the afternoon with an intra-squad scrimmage, and then the Barbarian twelve-and-under team took on the Sierra Foothill twelve-and-under team in a fast moving, physical, and competitive scrimmage. The first-year Barbarians gained a great deal of experience and displayed tremendous progress as the scrimmage progressed. The crowd in attendance also enjoyed learning about rugby, as well as the culture of sportsmanship and camaraderie that accompany the sport. After the scrimmage was complete both teams came together and recognized the others positive attributes. Then, in sticking with rugby tradition, the hosting Barbarians treated their fellow competitors to a post- game meal and socializing. The Barbarians are back in action Saturday, January 11th. They will be traveling to take on the Chico Youth Rugby Club in Chico. The Barbarians are still inviting those interested in playing rugby to sign up and come for some fun. The Gridley Barbarians would like to invite the community out to their first official home match on Saturday, January 25 at the rugby field located in the Eagle Meadows Park at the north end of Jay Drive in Gridley. The ten-and-under Barbarians begin play at noon, and the twelve-and-under Barbarians follow.
