Gridley High School's Jonathan Villapania put on another standout performance at the inaugural Joe Rios Memorial Tournament co-hosted by Chico and Durham High School on Saturday. More than 1,200 wrestling fans attended the event to watch the 397 wrestlers from 39 different teams compete in the inaugural tournament to commemorate the life of Joe Rios, which was tragically cut short when Rios suffered a fatal heart attack in November of 2012 at the age of 46. Villapania began the afternoon with a 7-0 decision over Drake McAdow of Damonte Ranch, and then followed up with a victory over Ripon's Gabe Barnett via pin fall. Villapania pinned Jonny Norris from Casa Robles to make his way into the semi-finals against College Park's Romello Monjaras. Monjaras came out on top with a 9-3 decision and faced Sutter's Alex Ingram for the championship. Ingram won the tourney in a 3-2 decision. After the loss, Villapania took on Robert Holloway from Ponderosa High School for a shot in the third place match. Villapania was victorious over Holloway in the tightly contested match, which ended in a 3-2 decision. In his final match of the day, the junior 152-pounder beat BV's Alex Bluemel 3-0 to take home the third place medal.
