What do you get when you have a young volunteer take on a big event like Gridley's Parade of Lights for the first time? A fantastic success that's what. There was never a doubt that Adrianna McConnell would do well after she decided to take this volunteer job on just two months ago. She is President of the newly formed Gridley PTA and probably enlisted the help of many of the parents involved in this group. McConnell did a great job not only getting participants but also sponsors to help finance the event for the Gridley Chamber of Commerce and BID. The annual parade began held last Thursday was complete with Grand Marshal Nicki Herrera, Quota Club's Cowboy Dick Jones and many, many children of all ages. The dancers of Ballet Folklorico impressed the crowd with their dancing while twirling their colorful dresses as they moved down Virginia and Hazel Streets. The Gridley High School Band performed along with the Gridley Titans and Cheerleaders. Manzanita School's Booster Club had a fantastic, beautifully lit float and Claude the Dragon even lit up Hazel Street with huge flames. A Gridley parade would not be complete without the bright, flashy red fire engines, one toting Santa at the end of the parade and this year the Butte County Sheriff's Department added many vehicles. Seeing so many children included, such as on the Gridley PTA and Synergy floats was a bonus along with the kids bundled against the cold on the Gridley Gators float. Gridley PTA sold nachos on Hazel Street as a fund raiser and the Miracle Ranch sold hot chocolate and popcorn next to the museum. Many thanks to everyone who participated and especially McConnell for her enthusiasm and hard work. She will no doubt be responsible for the parade for years to come after pulling off such a great event her first time. Judges Tony Walton, Bo Sheppard and Rick Rubino no doubt had a tough time judging the many categories during the 45 minute parade. Wheeler Ranch and Feed provided the trailer for them so that they could see the parade from a vantage point. Winners of the Parade will be announced in the Friday Gridley Herald.
