A first round 42-1 victory over Vallejo High School placed the Lady Bulldogs in the winners’ bracket of the annual Lady Bulldog Holiday Classic en route to a fourth place finish. Megan Anthony led the Bulldogs in the victory over the Apaches with 18 points. Junior Marin Spears finished the game with eight points. Gridley’s victory set them up to take on Shasta High School in the second round after the Wolves picked up a hard fought win over Oroville. Despite the easy win on Thursday, the Lady Bulldogs could not get anything going and were held to just four points in the first half. The Lady Wolves defense continued to hold Gridley at bay after the break, propelling them into Saturday’s championship game with a 50-14 victory over the Lady Bulldogs. Anthony led Gridley again in this contest with four points. Elizabeth Osbourn and Spears had three apiece, while Haylee Coats and Shelby Aldridge both finished with two. After a 97-54 win over Yuba City on Thursday and intense 78-76 loss to River Valley on Friday, El Camino High made their way to the third place game against the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday. Led by junior guard Jasmine Bernardo, the Eagle’s high scoring offense and aggressive defense opened the game fast and hard. The Eagles went on a 14-0 run before Gridley was able to get on the board and finished with 13 more to end the first, while holding the hosting Bulldogs to just seven. Of their 10 opening-quarter buckets, El Camino sank seven three-pointers. Spears was first to score for Gridley, and finished the first quarter with three points, while Osbourn had four. The Lady Bulldogs picked up the pace in the second quarter with 17 points, but they were unable to stop the precision shooting of the Lady Eagles who sailed into the half with a 48-24 lead. Gridley finally found their rhythm after the break, and their defense opened strong. But they again had difficulty stopping El Camino from behind the arch, as the Lady Eagles were able to sink four more three’s in the third. Gridley trailed 65-41 after three, and were only able to put up eight more points in the fourth. In the end, the Lady Bulldogs were unable to overcome their first half deficit, and the Lady Eagles earned a third place finish after winning by a score of 78-49. The Eagles finished with 17 three-pointers, eight of those were from their junior guard Jasmine Bernardo. Gridley’s junior forward Elizabeth Osbourn led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points, while junior Lauren Solis finished with 10. Whitney Hall and Megan Anthony both had five, and Teresa Leyva had four points. Anthony received All-Tournament honors for the Lady Bulldogs. Shasta High School dominated River Valley by a score of 53-24 for the tournament championship. Las Plumas battled Oroville for a 49-43 overtime victory in the consolation championship, while Vallejo picked up a 43-41 win over Yuba City in the seventh place game.
