  • INYOKERN — With one store already in place in Ridgecrest, a national retail broke ground Thursday in Inyokern, according to a news release from commercial real estate development company SimonCRE.
Dollar General tapped the development company in the early part of 2014 to secure property in Inyokern, Joshua Simon, the company CEO, said by phone on Thursday.
“Dollar General selected the area because it thought it was a good business opportunity and that it would bring much-needed services to the town of Inyokern,” Simon said. “Inyokern doesn’t really have any (grocery) stores, so this will be a big boon for the residents there.”
Dollar General opened a store in Ridgecrest on North Norma Street in July.
The nearest stores offering groceries is Inyokern Market on Brown Road and Buttermilk Acres Market on West Inyokern Road in the unincorporated area of Buttermilk Acres and China Lake Acres, and.
Most grocery stores, including Stater Bros. and Albertsons, are located in Ridgecrest.
“We think it will be a great thing for the residents there where they can do a lot of their basic needs shopping in Inyokern,” Simon said.
Simon stressed that Dollar General stores are not actual dollar stores, but more comparable to Walgreens or RiteAid.
“They carry everything from printing supplies to food to milk, along with some clothes,” Simon said.
The Inyokern store plans to be 9,000 sq. foot building located on two acres along Highway 178.
SimonCRE, a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based company, has secured another Arizona-based company as its general contractor. Simon said, however, that most of the subcontract work will be done by local and regional companies.
While there is no set date, Simon said he expects the Inyokern Dollar General store to be complete “sometime early next year.”
Simon added that Kern County was relatively easy to work with on the whole process.
“We were very successful with the county,” Simon said. “We started working on it midyear … Kern County was very great to deal with. We work on Dollar General stores all over California and we’ve found the county to be very friendly and would want to do more business with.”
