Irene Smith, of Gridley, was born May 18, 1938, in Southgate CA. She died October 8, 2013, in Gridley at her home surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Edythe and Bruce Brewer and her grandparents Clarence and Alice Crowell; her sister Diane Duncan and her daughter Teresa Johnson. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Dave Smith; her daughters Alice Johnson-Cooper (Ed) of East Biggs, and Sharon Marsh (Mike) of Bullhead City Az; a son, Bill Smith of Biggs, CA; Grandchildren Joshua Evanoff (Robin) of Fayetteville, NC; Gabrielle Basham of Oceanside, CA; Megan Marsh of Long Beach CA; Scott Marsh of Bullhead City AZ; Jennifer Smith of Gridley, CA; Joshua Cooper of Hagerstown MD; Patrick Cooper of Vacaville, CA; Michael Smith, Shawn Smith both of Gridley and Matthew Rinne of Gridley, CA; her brother, Gary Brewer of Eugene, OR, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Growing up in the Yreka -Montague, CA area with her grandparents on a variety of ranches, Irene developed a love for horses making her a country girl at heart. She had a real connection with Mt. Shasta and loved going there. When in her 20's she traveled to Guam and Japan. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking and reading, going to the local casinos, taking trips with her husband to Reno and Boomtown. She was proud of her Indian heritage and loved her Indian décor she collected. She worked at Tri-Valley Growers, Ehman Olive Company and The Gridley Herald. She had a personality that inspired others and loved to make everyone laugh with all her funny stories. Her friends loved her for her loyalty and honesty and miss her very much. Per her request, no services were held but a family gathering in Mt. Shasta is planned for the spring of 2014.
