As I’ve written several times, Milford didn’t go looking for this casino; the developers came to Milford. Having considered their generous offer, the negative impacts a casino might bring, and the sketchy characters associated with the Foxwoods proposal, the voters of Milford Tuesday said “no thanks.”

This is exactly how the Massachusetts gaming law is supposed to work.  No community is forced to accept a casino in its borders.  Applicants must negotiate a host community agreement with local leaders and the voters have to approve it.  Some communities – Springfield, Everett, Leominster, Plainville, Revere – have voted yes, while others – West Springfield, Palmer, East Boston, and now Milford – have said no.

It’s a hard and expensive process for developers. Foxwoods, Mohegan Sun, Hard Rock and others have bet millions on the process and lost every dime. But these guys are gamblers, so they should be used to losing a bet from time to time.
