  • The City of Gridley's former Accounting Clerk Gloria Gonzalez, 48, of Live Oak, who plead guilty to embezzlement of City funds July 22, 2013 was sentenced Friday, October 25, 2013 in Butte County Superior Court to seven years in State Prison. The entire Gonzalez family was arrested in September 2010 for embezzling a total of $424,195 from the City of Gridley during her employment. Gonzalez worked for the City of Gridley in the finance department 15 years. While conducting a check reconciliation process at the City of Gridley, irregularities were discovered with voided checks being cashed and cleared by banks. After a more thorough investigation, a search warrant was served on Gonzalez on September 14, 2010. Gonzalez was arrested by Gridley-Biggs Police Officers and the Sutter County Sheriff's Department. Gonzalez was charged with seven felonies and two misdemeanors. The City of Gridley's crime bond through their insurance company made it possible for the City to recoup $394,434.33 as a full settlement of the embezzled money. The sentencing was handed down by Butte County Superior Court Judge Tamara Mosbarger for felony counts of embezzlement, cashing multiple checks with non-sufficient funds, filing a false tax return and receiving a fraudulent tax refund. A two year enhancement was included in the sentencing for the allegation that Gonzalez embezzled more than $200,000.
