  • Biggs Wolverines clench another win

  • After watching the first few plays from scrimmage, Biggs head coach Ron Carr said all he could think about was last weeks article in The Gridley Herald titled "Deja Vue" and how it talked about his Wolverines falling apart against the Spartans last season after a healthy start. Biggs took the opening kick off and was stuffed on the first two plays. On the third play Biggs QB Blaine Roles was off target and missed a wide open Nathan Callaway right at the first down marker while East Nic cornerback Jamie Del Toro came in and intercepted the ball and returned it to the Wolverine 25 yard line. Three plays later the Spartans were on the scoreboard and just like that it was 7-0 Big Red Machine. But Biggs didn't hang their heads and took the ball on the 35 after a short return by Callaway. Biggs methodically moved the chains and found itself on the East Nic 3 yard line. Biggs coughed the ball up and East Nic pounced on it on the one. East Nicholas fans watched as their team struggled and stalled at about the 40 yard line and prepared to punt. Biggs defensive end Caleb Melton who lead all tacklers on the night with 11 crossed the East Nicholas line untouched and went for the block. Melton missed the ball, coming in at an angle and came down hard on the East Nicholas punter who also happened to be their star QB Zach Schuler. Schuler never got up, suffering a possible hyperextended knee. EN coach John Dolenga said afterwords in a Sutter County newspaper that in all his years of coaching football he had never seen anything like it. I have to wonder if Dolenga  has maybe been coaching a lot of flag football? East Nicholas was back alive with the running into the punter penalty and started driving but the Wolverine defense held and the offense took over, literally! Biggs drove down the field in typical wishbone style, one first down at a time, before Greyson Milburn who played a stellar game Friday night punched in Biggs' first score of the evening, Israel Farfan kicked the extra point a mile and the score was knotted at 7 apiece. The Spartans took over for a short time and decided to go to it's passing game. Wyatt Cain, Biggs' Jr. safety had other ideas and intercepted  QB Kulveeer Sandhar's slant pass and returned it about the 20 yard setting up the Wolverines next score. Grey Milburn scored his second touchdown of the night off of the Cain interception, Farfan was wide left on the extra point and Biggs led 13-7. The Wolverines came out and shut down East Nicholas on the first drive of the 3rd quarter and drove in again and fumbled a second time on the goal line, but QB Blaine Roles was there to scoop up the ball and muscled it in for Biggs' 3rd touchdown, Farfan booted the point after in and it was 20-7 Wolverines! No rivalry game would be complete without a comeback and East Nic tried to do just that. East Nic's back up QB did a phenomenal job of trying o hold his team together and scrambled around avoiding the Wolverine pressure on the next drive completing 2 of 3 of his passes, the last one resulting in a 40 yd touchdown. Greyson Milburn who was a wrecking ball all night on both sides of the ball blocked the extra point by jumping on it before the kicker ever had a chance to set his feet. The score was now 20-13 and we had a ball game! Biggs ended up punting on it's next drive. Dalton Evenson ran downfield to cover the punt and made a beautiful open field tackle. East Nic's punt returner limped off the field with some help from his teammates and East Nic set up shop in the spread formation. Remember Wyatt Cain from the first half? Well he was back and shut down East Nic's drive, intercepting Sandhar for a second time on the night. The three man running back committee of Callaway, Evenson, and Milburn marched the ball right down the field and after a late hit being added on to a very nice Milburn run, all Evenson had to do was skate a little ways, untouched off the right side for the next touchdown, on came Farfan and it was 27-13 and being midway through the 4th quarter East Nic's hopes of their first win on the year were slipping fast. Sandhar came out throwing on the Spartans' next possession. On his first pass, Nathan Callaway tipped it away with some really nice coverage. Sandhar came back on the very next play to the very same spot, this time Callaway out jumped EN's Dylan Thornsberry picked off Sandhar's pass and took this one to the house. Here comes Farfan and it was 34-13. East Nicholas would score again but not until everyone was looking for their car keys. The final score was 34-19 as Biggs managed to stuff the 2 pt. conversion attempt. Most of the stats for the night weren't available when I sat down to finish this article, I couldn't reach Coach Carr for comment. After watching his Wolverines lose this rivalry game for eight straight years prior to this game, I bet he was just hanging out on the hammock chewing on some Big Red gum. Biggs plays up into division III for the 3rd straight week Friday night as it hosts Esparto for their homecoming. Biggs also won the J.V. contest 22-0.
