Partial skeletal remains were discovered in the backyard of a vacant Live Oak home located on the 2400 block of Archer Avenue on Monday.
Anthropologists from California State University, Chico, were at the scene to assist detectives by excavating the site.
Lt. Butah Uppal of the Sutter County Sheriff's Department described the find as a single piece of human remains, but he declined to comment on what the remains were exactly while the investigation is pending.
Uppal stated that it was too early to determine how long the remains had been there or if foul play was involved.
The single bone was discovered while someone was doing some work and digging in the area.
The house is a rental that has been vacant for the past four months. Authorities say the landlord is fully cooperating.
