Try this for the record books! For the first time ever, Gridley girls have won District honors! Gridley girls went 6-0 in the District 47 Tournament beating Chico Red, Palermo twice, Durham and Chico Black twice. “We had outstanding pitchers consisting of Haley Nichols, Ally Mardesich and MaKenna Byrne,” Coach Kory Carlquist stated. Nichols pitched in four games and three complete games. She throws hard and accurate and has a bright future ahead of her in softball. She earned Player of the Game in game two of the tournament against Palermo. Mardesich and Byrne pitched in tandem and did outstanding as well. Byrne came in to pitch in game three of the tournament against Durham in the second inning. Gridley was down 4-2 with two runners on base. Byrne pitched the rest of the game and shut Durham down. Allowing Gridley to win 9-5, Byrne earned Player of the Game. When Mardesich wasn't pitching, she played shortstop. When Byrne wasn't pitching, she played first. Both of their bats were huge for the team also. Mardesich earned Player of the Game in game five against Chico Black. Isabelle Hernandez caught every inning for Gridley. “In my opinion, she is the best catcher in District 47,” Carlquist stated. “She shows up every game ready to give her very best. Her bat was excellent as well. She earned Player of the Game in game four of the tournament against Palermo.” Macy McClellan played solid for Gridley at second base. She didn't play there all season but she was moved there for the All Stars, proving to be a smart and talented player. McClellan earned Player of the Game in game six against Chico Black. Grace Pantaleoni played center field and batted second for Gridley. Being a very fast player she covered a lot of ground for Gridley in center field. She had the game winning hit in the bottom of the sixth inning with two ours in game one of the tournament against Chico Red, earning Player of the Game. Ruby Tena played third base with a great glove and a great arm. “It's hard to believe Ruby had never played before. Her bat was huge at key moments for us as well,” Carlquist stated. Maycee Sullivan played right field and batted with power throughout the whole tournament. Izabella Fredericks, Kaitlyn Carlquist and Rylie Hudson played left and right field for Gridley all doing great and all three of them put the ball in play when up to bat. Carlquist said, “It's been a true privilege to be able to coach these kids. I have been doing this a long time and this is the most talented group I've ever had. Excellent pitching, solid defense and hitters from top to bottom. “I've also been fortunate to have the same coaches I had last year. Earl Nichols and Andy McClellan are excellent with the girls and have a lot of knowledge.” Congratulations girls !! Great job!
