  • This month four seventh grade girls from the Live Oak, Manzanita, Sycamore and Biggs Middle Schools will be spending a week in the dorms on the University of California Davis campus. They will be joining 84 girls from throughout northern California in attending workshops on genetics, ecology/wildlife, robotics, environmental engineering and architecture mapping at the AAUW Tech Trek Camp. The American Association of University Women has been sponsoring these camps on college and university campuses in all parts of California for almost fifteen years, with the intention of encouraging young girls to consider a future in one of the many math and/or science based professions. A survey of former campers from this area has found that they have all gone on to attend college and the majority has majored in science fields. Many of those who have now graduated college are working in such fields as medicine, veterinary science, geography, biology and computer science. AAUW Gridley Branch, with the generous financial help of FOCUS and the Live Oak Lions, has sent more than thirty local girls to these camps since 2002. The cost has risen through the years and now is $900 for each camper. With the help of these organizations it has been possible to send four girls each year. The schools have nominated outstanding candidates to attend Tech Trek, and AAUW would send more students if funds were available. An AAUW fundraiser has been their cheesecake sales at Easter. The support of the local community for this project has been deeply appreciated and private donations are also very welcome. For further information you may contact Jean Curcuru at 868-5499, or checks may be made out to AAUW and sent to the Gridley Library, 299 Spruce Street, Gridley.
