  • Nestled just a few miles from Gridley in the majestic Sutter Buttes is a gold mine of sorts. The gold you will find is in the award winning wines produced at Cordi Winery, Sutter County's first winery, owned by Reece and Teresa Cordi. On Sunday, June 23, 2013, members of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and friends came to join in on the “Blessing of the Vines,” performed by Father John Harris. Although a few drops of rain had fallen earlier in the day, the weather could not have been nicer for this wonderful occasion as the Cordis celebrated their dream coming true. Nearly 50 people enjoyed the wines, a potluck dinner and a beautiful ambiance. Jim and Lynn Jackson and Milt and Margaret Brown barbecued tri tip and chicken to perfection. The 15 acres now planted in vineyards used to be the home of almond trees until harsh winds toppled them. This made it possible for the vineyards to go in and a whole different type of work to be done. Since planting the first vines in June 2009, the winery has been awarded several top honors. In 2012, the San Francisco Chronicle's Wine Competition named Cordi Winery a Gold winner for their 2010 Primitivo. The California State Fair awarded a silver, Best of Class, to the same wine in 2012. The San Francisco Chronicle's Wine Competition 2013 gave the Cordis a Silver for their 2009 Sauvignon Blanc and 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon and a Bronze for their 2009 Pino Grigio, 2009 Zinfandel, 2009 Petite Sirah and 2011 Estate Primitivo. The 2013 Orange County Wine Competition awarded the 2009 Petite Sirah a Gold and the 2009, Zinfandel and 2011 Estate Primitivo a Bronze award. This year's California State Fair gave the Cordi's a Bronze for their 2009 Sauvignon Blanc. Not bad for a brand new winery. Select varieties are available for purchase at New Earth Market in Yuba City. The winery is open the first and third weekends of each month from noon to 6 p.m., or by appointment. The winery will be closed July 6 and 7 but will be open July 20 and 21. This is a beautiful place to spend a few hours, take your friends, sit and sip while you enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Sutter Buttes. The Cordi's along with their daughters Julia and Emily have worked very hard to make this dream a success and featuring eight different wines, makes it possible for great purchases whether it is for yourself or a friend. The winery is easy to find from Gridley. Take Pennington Road past Gray Lodge to the end. Turn right and follow Powell and West Butte Road to Meyers. Turn left and travel just .2 miles before you see Ingram and take a right. Follow Ingram 1.1 miles and you won't miss the beautiful vines beckoning you to stop and enjoy.
