  • Former Mayor Doris Long will be honored at the Butte County Library Saturday, June 15, 2013 for her many years of service at both the Carnegie and Spruce Street Gridley Library branches. Long will be presented the “Wiley Award,” which was established by the Gridley Friends of the Library, named after Donald and Nora Wiley, who supported the library for many years both monetarily and as volunteers. The event will begin at 4 p.m., followed by a book signing by "Gridley Girls," author Meredith Carlin First. First will read a chapter of the book that depicts her childhood in Gridley and attending Gridley High School. Although the names have been changed, First goes through her fondest memories, especially the wedding of her friend "Anne Calzaretta." The star of the book, Meg Monahan is hosting the wedding of her best friend and the two flash back to Gridley High School in 1978 when things seemed so much easier to Anne. First will begin the day at the Gridley Ice Burgie from 11 to 2 p.m., where she will also be signing advance copies of the book that will be sold with ten percent of the proceeds going to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospitals.
