One local athlete will perform today at the prestigious CIF State Meet after a standout performance at the section finals last Friday. The top performers at the NSCIF Finals were selected to compete at the State Track and Field Meet today, while the top five finishers received medals. At the Northern Section Championships at West Valley High in Cottonwood, Gridley sophomore Marisela Cardenas won the shot put with a throw of 40-0.5. Cardenas outdistanced the 37-06.5 toss from the next closest competitor. Gridley’s Tyler Abrego was the only other local medalist, with a leap of 5-10.00 to take fifth place in the high jump. Despite running a career best in 400m, Friday at the Northern Section, Live Oak sophomore Adrian Silva fell just short of the podium after finishing in sixth place. Silva’s time of 52.21 on Friday bested his previous PR by almost three-tenths of a second, and it was the tenth fastest time in the Northern Section this season. Silva also fell short in the long jump, never getting his steps correct and jumping only 18'8" to finish eighth. Gridley distance runner Ryan King finished the 1600M in eighth with a time of 4:54.27, breaking his previous best of 4:56.35. The Bulldogs’ other distance runners, Averie Roberts and Brennah Payne competed in both the 1600m and the 3200m. Roberts finished in seventh place in the 3200m, setting a new career best time of 12:11.69. Her previous best was set earlier this season at 12:13.00. Roberts also finished ninth in the 1600m at 5:43.85. Payne finished behind Roberts in both events, taking tenth in the 1600m at 5:44.94 and eleventh in the 3200m at 12:37.30. The CIF State Meet will take place today and tomorrow at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
