Wheatland High School hosted the Butte View League Track and Field Championships last Friday, where several Gridley athletes had huge success at both the varsity and JV levels. The top two finishers in each event qualified for the NSCIF Division II Championships that will take place today at Wheatland’s John Sohrakoff Jr. Field.
Ryan King led the pack of Bulldogs with a victory in the varsity boys’ 800m with a time of 2:13:54* and finished in second place in the 1600m at 4:57.67*. Joaquin Johnson had two second place finishes in both the 110m hurdles (19.06) and 300m hurdles (47.21). Johnson, Chad Brown, King, and Tom Hunter placed second in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:53.83. Tyler Abrego won the high jump with a leap of 5-2.
Averie Roberts took first place in both the varsity girls’ 1600m and the 3200m. Roberts' times of 5:34.01 (1600m) and 12:13.00 (3200m) surpassed not only her season best mark, but they marked new career bests as well as the top times for both events in the NSCIF Division II. Brennah Payne followed Roberts in both events, taking second in the 3200m (13:01.00) and third in the 1600m (5:49.85). Marisela Cardenas won the shot put with a distance of 40-11.5 and placed second in the discus with a throw of 101-00. Ashtyn MacFarlane won the 100m hurdles (18.09) and placed third in the long jump (13-10.25), while Alexa Garcia had a second place finish in the triple jump (29-08).
For the JV boys, Taylor Miskin won the 110m hurdles (16.43)* and the 300m hurdles (43.04), while Keysean Johnson finished right behind Miskin in second place for both events (110m hurdles – 17.24; 300m hurdles – 46.41). Miskin placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 37-03. Keysean Johnson teamed with Angel Santana, Tanner Ramsey, and Jonah Derder to win the 4x100m relay with a time of 46.66. Derder placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5-00, while Santana had third place finishes in the 100m (11.83) and the 200m (24.12)*. Benjamin Sanner had a second place finish in the 800m (2:15.84)* and the 1600m (4:55.69)*. Sanner, Derder, Santana, and Carlos Ruiz placed third in the 4x400m relay (3:52.15). Jose Vasquez placed second in the shot put at 37-04.5*.
Elizabeth Osbourn won the JV girls’ 400m with a time of 1:07.80 and the triple jump at 30-01.50*, while Jamie Burr took first in the 100m hurdles (17.83) and the 300m hurdles (56.45). Burr, Lauren Solis, Osbourn, and Katie Paredes made up the winning 4x400m relay team with a time of 4:53.28. Solis won the long jump at 14-11.50 and placed second in the 200m at 28.66, while Burr also finished third in the long jump at 14-01.25. Paredes won the high jump at 4-02, while Solis and Esmeralda Ramos tied for second at 4-0, marking a new PR for Ramos. Marin Spears took first in the shot put with a throw of 32-05* and second in the discus at 99-03*. Joanna Sanchez finished second in the 100m hurdles, and Sarah Compton had third place finishes in the 1600m (7:32.25) and the 3200m (17:11.61).
