  • Saturday, April 20, the Biggs community came together to celebrate 105 years of uninterrupted library service. The library is one of the few still functioning Carnegie libraries in California. The Biggs Volunteer Action Group and Biggs Women's Club hosted the day and planned the activities, which included a book sale and crafts for kids, and supplied the refreshments. Mayor Roger Frith presented the library with a city proclamation in recognition of the library's milestone. The proclamation also recognized the fifteen years of volunteer service the Biggs Women's Club gave to keep the library open in the 1980s and 90s. Vice Mayor James (Bo) Sheppard, Councilmember John Busch and City Administrator Mark Sorensen joined in the celebration. Library Director Melanie (Mel) Lightbody and staff from other Butte County library locations also were in attendance throughout the day, including Susie Serrano, Children's Services, Cynthia Pustejovsky, Gridley, Biggs and Durham Branch Librarian, Kimberlee Wheeler, Library Outreach Coordinator, and Sarah Vantrease, Chico Branch Librarian. Biggs branch manager, Pat Norhnberg, greeted visitors to the library's open-house and answered questions about the library and its services. “Sunny Bee Bear” and the literacy coach from Butte County Literacy Services visited. David Jewell and Polly Bright from Literacy gave tours of the coach, helped the children make sun visors and gave each child a book. Butte County Library also celebrates 100 years of service this year. A photo exhibit of various buildings, activities, and some of the people who have served the County through the years, and a countywide map of locations was on display in the library. The Biggs branch is open Tuesday afternoons, 12:00 – 6:00.
