  • To increase agriculture awareness and recruit students from local elementary schools into Gridley High School’s Ag. Department and FFA program, Gridley FFA officers held an Ag. Day event last Wednesday. Gridley FFA members introduced the younger students to what FFA is, and gave them the opportunity to see what FFA members do on a daily basis. Students were taught about raising different types of livestock, and were even given some hands on experience—such as bottle-feeding a lamb. The younger students were taught how to plant flowers, and were able to take it home with them at the end of the day. “Our goal as a chapter is to educate the younger students about agriculture and the industry that is right here in their own backyard,” said FFA Advisor Matt Reed. Industry representatives were also present at the event and informed students about different aspects of the agricultural industry, such as shearing lambs, welding, making butter, cutting PVC pipe with string, and torching metal. At the end of the day, the children from the elementary schools were provided lunch by Gridley’s FFA program. “We want the younger students to know” said Reed, “ even though food gets purchased at the store, there are people like farmers and ranchers who raise it and millions of others who make sure they have food on the table and clothes on their back.”
