  • Independent Living Services of Northern California, the Eye Life Institute, and northeastern California Lions clubs are presenting an eye care exposition and conference in Chico on Saturday, May 18. “A Gateway to Better Vision” will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Enloe Conference Center at 1528 The Esplanade, just east of Enloe Hospital. It is open to the public and registration is made by calling 893-8527. Larry Marcum of the Forest Ranch Lions Club said that “within our area there is a great need for persons who are blind and visually handicapped or starting to lose their eyesight to gain information and hands-on demonstrations of assistive technology equipment to help them deal with living with sight loss.” Marcum, a leader in the local Guide Dogs for the Blind program, is second vice district governor of Lions District 4 C-1, the parent organization overseeing 46 Lions clubs in 12 northeastern California counties. The program includes free eye screening, information on the latest low vision technology, an overview of vision impairment service agencies, and several guest speakers. There will be demonstrations and resource tables on topics of low vision glasses, handheld lenses, audio devices and lighting options, electronic readers and magnifiers, eye health through nutrition, in-home services for the visually impaired, training and rehabilitation, and low vision support groups. Doctors David J. Gajda and Randall R. McPherran of the Eye Life Institute will be available to answer questions.
