The Live Oak Lions Varsity Baseball Team has had a tough season. They only have one win on the year and the majority of their games are not very close in score. So, when the undefeated team of Willows came to town, the Lions knew it would be a hard game to win. Willows didn’t leave anything on the table, shutting out the Lions 10-0. Starting in the 2nd inning, Willows showed their offensive power. Briones led off the 2nd inning with a double, followed by walks from K. Enos and Wycoff to load the bases. The next batter, G. Enos, flied out to left field, but Briones came in to score after tagging up to credit G. Enos with an RBI. K. Enos and Wycoff also advanced to third and second bases, respectively, on the play also by way of the tag up. Burgloff then came to the plate and hit into a successful fielder’s choice. On the ground ball play, the Lions decided to try and get K. Enos out at the plate. However, K. Enos was ruled safe, so Burgloff was credited with an RBI. With Burgloff on first and Wycoff and third, Renfro was up to bat and, while he flied out to center field, was credited with an RBI as Wycoff scored using the tag up. Two more batters came up to the plate during the inning and Burgloff would reach third base, but no more Willows runs would score during the inning. In the third inning, Willows would strike again. With one out, Briones took a walk, and then stole to 2nd base during K. Enos’ at bat. It was a good move because K. Enos would hit the ball into what would become a 2 base error on the Lions. The error resulted in K. Enos reaching second base and Briones scoring. However, K. Enos would not score as the Lions made two consecutive outs to end the inning. After 3 innings, the score was 4-0. After the Lions shut them down in the 4th inning, Willows put more runs on the board in the 5th inning. This time, Amaro led off the run with a single. Amaro would then steal second and advance to third on a fielder’s choice play that resulted in a ground out for Love. Briones was the next guy up and he helped bring Amaro in after he hit into a Lions error. Two batters later, Wycoff was able to bring in Briones, who had made it to third base, by way of the tag up after he flied out to center field. Yet, Willows was not finished. They finished off the game in strong offensive fashion, scoring 4 final runs in the 7th inning. Three of those runs were RBI’d in and the other run was made by Love. Love hit a single that, after an outfield error, resulted in him scoring a run. ... To read this article in full, pick up a copy of the April 17, 2013 issue of the Gridley Herald.
