  • The Bulldogs dropped both games in a doubleheader on Tuesday against the visiting Pirates from Wheatland, but Coach Dan Crabtree affirms that his team is steadily improving. In the first game, the Pirates pulled a 5-1 victory. Freshman Sam Cota started at the mound for Gridley, pitching 4-and-a-third innings with three runs. Cota allowed six hits and struck out six pirates. The Bulldogs’ relief pitcher, also a freshman, Quinn Spring had two strikeouts and gave up two hits. Gridley’s lone run came after Kyle Duran knocked a homerun over left field. In the second game, Wheatland pulled out another victory by a score of 6-2. Duran pitched the first five and a third innings with a performance that pleased Coach Crabtree, while Michael Stohlman finished the game for the Bulldogs. Coach Crabtree said Saad Khan played a solid game. Khan, a senior in his first year on the team, went 2 for 4 at the place. The Bulldogs left 12 runners stranded in the second game on Tuesday but still played a solid game defensively, according to Crabtree. In Monday’s non-league game against the Las Plumas Thunderbirds, the team fell by a score of 11-7. Chad Brown opened the game pitching the first three innings with eight runs, while Mark McConnell closed the game with three runs in the final three innings. Duran went 4 for 6 at the plate with a triple and two RBIs while Spring went 2 for five with a double and two RBIs. Also on Monday, the Gridley JV Baseball team took out Las Plumas by a score of 12-9. Austin Knipe went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs and a double to lead the Bulldogs. Cole Moody and Kyle Blankenship both went 1 for 2, while Colton Graff finished 1 for 3 with two runs.
