Local businessman Herman Sunderman was appointed to the Gridley Planning Commission during the Gridley City Council meeting Monday night. Sunderman is very community oriented especially when it comes to volunteering. He is a longtime member of the Gridley Lions Club and North Butte Lodge F&AM and moved to Gridley in 1988 with his wife Karri and four children. Sunderman was honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in February for his dedication to community service and for many years has offered his business location for the Butte County Continuum of Care to conduct surveys. Working in the glass business for 30 years, Sunderman is also a licensed contractor. Sunderman stated he looks forward to living in a city he can be proud of, noting the condition of the city streets, in particular Hazel Street, which is set for improvements in the City's project set for July. Council members held a public hearing to apply for a $900,000 grant through the State Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program with the following activities: General Administration $62,791; First time home ownership assistance $465,116 and Housing Rehabilitation Program $372,093. At the request of Councilman Frank Hall, Council approved a plaque be placed at the City's Boat Ramp and Park in honor of longtime Public Works Director Ed Melton who worked for the City of Gridley 43 years and was instrumental in the planning of the new boat ramp park. Council approved a resolution in support of the second amendment of the United States Constitution at the request of the Butte County Sheriff's Department. A fee deferment agreement between the City of Gridley and Biggs-Gridley Memorial Hospital was approved for the new ER Department set to break ground this summer. The City's estimated cost for the electrical work needed is $101,946.90 and the hospital asked for deferment until the project is completed in order to keep reserves required to fund the current operations and pay for the project out of funds received for the construction at that time. A study session preceded the regular Council members where local organizations put in monetary requests for the budget process. A second study session for the budget process will be held April 15, 2013 with the final opportunity to request funds at the third session, May 6, 2013, also at 6 p.m. Council meet meet April 15. 2013 for the next reg
