Biggs High School hosted Gridley, Colusa, Los Molinos, Portola, Hamilton, Orland, and East Nicolaus over the weekend for the 5th Annual Bobby Hill Tournament.
In their opening game, Biggs fell to Quincy 9-2 after comnitting six errors. Brendin Milbrath went the distance on the hill and picked up four strikeouts for Biggs, while only allowing Quincy three earned runs. Dalton Evenson went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Chance Felkins finished 2 for 3 with an RBI.
In the following game, against Portola, the Wolverines allowed nine walks in a crushing 17-1 defeat. The Wolverines were held to only four hits in the loss. Trevor Horn picked up a double, while Evenson, Milbrath and Blain Roles each added hits.
Biggs wrapped up the tournament with a loss against Los Molinos to fall to eighth place in the tournament.
After falling behind by eight in just three and a half innings, the Wolverines looked to redeem themselves by picking up two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. Felkins hit a double in the sixth to bring in the third run of the sixth, but it wouldn’t be enough to pick up a victory as Los Molinos won the final game of the tournament 10-9.
The Gridley Baseball team did not have much luck either over the weekend, winning one of four.
After coming out strong in the first inning by picking up four runs, the Bulldogs fell to the Hamilton Braves in the Bobby Hill Tournament opener, 10-4.
Gridley’s first three batters picked up walks thanks to Hamilton’s pitcher, until Sam Cota picked up a single. The next batter up was Kyle Duran, who was also walked. With the bases loaded, Duran’s walk brought in Gridley’s first run. Chad Brown hit a single for Gridley to drive in another Gridley score. Hamilton’s pitcher walked another Gridley batter to bring the score 3-0. Gridley’s final score came after a batter was hit. Things fell apart for the Bulldogs after the top of the first, as Hamilton bounced back to win 10-4.
Later that day, the Bulldogs picked up an 11-4 victory over Los Molinos. On Saturday, in the fifth place game, the Bulldogs lost to Portola by a score of 8-3. Individual stats were not available for the Los Molinos or Portola games.
The tournament is a tribute to Bobby Hill, who coached baseball at Biggs High School. Hill graduated from Corning Union High School in 1987 and played catcher for Butte College and Shasta College before earning a scholarship to William Penn University in Iowa. Hill died of brain cancer in 2006. The field in which the Biggs High School team plays on is also named after Bobby Hill.
