Melissa Hetherwick, 29, formerly of Biggs, was seriously injured Sunday, February 24, 2013 while traveling on Montgomery Street in Downtown Oroville. Hetherwick, the daughter of Ilona and the late Bob Hetherwick, lives in Oroville with her husband Justin Younger and daughter Leila, and is 23 weeks pregnant. She sustained a shattered arm and wrist which will never have normal use according to doctors, following surgery last Thursday. She is due to have her baby June 29 but will have to have a c-section because her left pelvic bone was broken. She is unable to use crutches and it is unclear if she will be able to transfer to Enloe's Rehabilitation Center because of her pregnancy.
Hetherwick received a broken collarbone and broken ribs and is still on oxygen.
Tests show that the baby is fine after being checked first every six hours and now every 12 hours because of exposure to numerous x-rays and MRI's.
Hetherwick was moved from ICU following the arm surgery last week. Her arm will be in a metal brace with screws through her arm for the next six weeks and will have a cast following the brace.
The two vehicle accident occurred when 18-year-old Shaina L. Appleyard of Oroville, allegedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs, crashed head on into Hetherwick's 2005 Toyota and a park bench occupied by two teenagers who were also hurt in the crash. One of the teenagers, a 15-year-old female was thrown through a plate glass window behind the bench. To read the rest of this story, Please pick up a 3/6/13 edition of The Gridley Herald.
