On February 13th the Biggs chess team traveled to Corning to compete in the fifth Sacramento Valley Scholastic Chess League tournament of the year.
On February 13th the Biggs chess team traveled to Corning to compete in the fifth Sacramento Valley Scholastic Chess League tournament of the year. During the tournament team trophies were awarded for the previous SVSCL chess tournament that was held in Chico in January. The Biggs team rushed to the stage and accepted the second place team trophy when the results were announced. They earned the trophy by scoring 13 points out of a possible 15. Team scores are established by adding up the wins scored by each team’s top five finishers.
The leading scorers for Biggs were Brian Caro, James Adams, and Jordan Pina who each went undefeated to go 3 and 0. Martin Castaneda, Diego San Paolo, Cheyden Rivero Jackson, and Letizia Alvarez all went 2 and 1 to contribute to the winning score. Also scoring and contributing to the team effort were Maedean Sharrock, Feyana Blaylock, Brandon Branch-Self, Marc Mattos, Ashley Rudd, Melina Mize, Logan Thompson, Ruby Watson, and Ovian Cammon.
Ten schools from the cities of Yuba City, Biggs, Chico, and Corning and over 120 players competed in the Chico tournament to make it the largest of the year. The next tournament for Biggs will be the SVSCL championships which will take place in Chico on March 6.
