Introduction to Lichen Identification by Tom Carlberg. March 9, 2013. For most people lichens are only colorful blotches on rocks or just moss-like stuff on tree branches. But lichens are a unique association between a fungus and an algae. This workshop will explore the basics of lichens in the lab in Holt Hall and also in the field from 9am to 4pm in Holt 129 at CSU Chico. Mushroom Foraging and Identification Workshop. March 16, 2013. Back by popular demand! This workshop will be useful for beginners as well as for people with some knowledge of mushrooms and is co-sponsored by the CSU Chico Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve. This workshop starts with an introduction to mushrooms, then collecting in the field and finally identifying the mushrooms that are found. We need enough rain for the spring batch of mushrooms to come up for this workshop to happen. The instructor, Philip Carpenter, has extensive knowledge of mushrooms and has been a member of the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz since it was organized in 1984. This workshop will meet at the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve from 9am to 5 pm. The registration is $100.00. Please register in advance.
