  • Haiden Johnson, the No. 2 seed at the Masters, made it to his third championship match in a row after going 3-1 to take second place at the 122 pound division at the Masters tournament over the weekend. Johnson took home the league title two weeks ago, and the section title last week.
Seeded No. 7 was Jonathan Villapania (147), who missed the majority of the season due to an injury beat long-time rival from Orland, Lorenzo Landeros, to take third place at Masters. Villapania, who went 5-1 on the day, will join Johnson at the State Wrestling Tournamanet.
Out of the eight Gridley wrestlers that qualified for sections, seven went on to wrestle Saturday. Colton Franklin, Frankie Quintano, Kyle Rutter, Tom Hunter, and Noel Tinoco all finished the day with two wins and two losses—all of which were one match away from placing at Masters.
As a team, Gridley placed 11th out of the 47 teams in the Northern Section out of all the divisions.
Live Oak's Kirk Thao took fourth place at 128 pounds to wrap up local Masters’ medalists.
The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
