Members of the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary held a Flag Folding Demonstration Monday at Manzanita Elementary School for second and third graders. Members not only performed the flag folding but explained what each of the folds meant, as follows:

The first fold of the flag stands for liberty; #2  fold represented unity; #3  fold stands for justice; #4  fold symbolizes persseverance; #5  fold represents hardiness;#6  fold stands for valor; #7  fold symbolizes purity;#8  fold represents innocence; #9  fold signifies sacrifice; #10 fold stands for honor; #11 fold symbolizes Independence; #12 fold represents truth.

VFW members explained the color of the flags: George Washington decribed the White in the flag as symbolizing our desire for liberty the land of the free.

The red signifies the courage and sacrifices of the nations defenders, and the blue has been likened to the loyalty and unity of our citizens.

It was further explained that The Pledge of Allegiance stands for:  I pledge allegiance (I promise to be true) 

to the flag (to the symbol of our country)  of the United States of America  ( each state that has joined to make our country) and to the republic (a republic is a country where the people choose others to make laws for them the goverment is for the people) for which it stands (the flag means the country) one nation  (a single country)under God (the people believe in a supreme being) Indivisible (the country cannot be split into parts with Liberty and justice (with freedom and fairness) for all (for each person in the country)..

Each of the students were presented with their own flag and flag sticker and were excited to be able to ask questions of the visitors.
