  • Coach McCray was quite pleased with her Lady Bulldog’s after Friday night’s BVL matchup against the Sutter Huskies. McCray told her team to come out with intensity, hustle and aggressiveness before the game, and she says they did just that.

Despite a 49-48 loss, Gridley bounced back from an 11-point deficit at the start of the fourth and were just inches away from sending the game into overtime after Alexa Garcia hit a two-point jump shot with a second left in the game.

Garcia kicked off the scoring with a 3-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs who outscored Sutter 13-6 in the first. Unfortunately things proved to be much more difficult for the Lady Bulldogs during the second quarter as Sutter started feeding the ball down below to Erika Larsen and Shelby Hill, both over six feet tall. Sutter outscored Gridley 18-5 in the second to go into the half with a score of 24-18.

During the intermission, McCray told her team to start focusing on outside shots and to key in on Larsen and Hill.

“Our outside shooting was really working for us, and I knew it was going to continue.”

The Lady Bulldogs picked up their defense in the third quarter but had difficulty landing their shots. Sutter knocked in 14 points compared to Gridley’s nine in the third.

Down by 11 points at the start of the final quarter, the Lady Bulldogs came out on fire and quickly erased the deficit, hitting four jumpers and a 3-pointer. Within the final seconds of the game, down by a score of 49-46, the Bulldogs took over possession and passed the ball over to Alexa Garcia on the left wing. Garcia toed the 3-point line with hopes to send the game into overtime but couldn’t get a clear view of the basket. She took a few steps to get a clear shot and sent a clutch jumper toward the basket to hit nothing but net. Unfortunately when Garcia moved to avoid her teammate, she ended up just inside the 3-point line.

Nevertheless, the Lady Bulldogs outscored Sutter 21-11 in the fourth despite not having standout senior Ashtyn MacFarlane for most of the game because of foul trouble. Catherine Roman and Alexa Garcia led all Gridley scorers in the close 49-48 loss with nine points. Madison Mardesich picked up eight points, while Elizabeth Osbourn finished with seven. Megan Anthony scored six points, Vanessa Ramirez had five, and MacFarlane finished with four.
