  • Representatives of the ALS Association attending the fundraiser held in honor of Meredith Byrne were overwhelmed at the support shown last Thursday at the Moose Lodge - so much so, one woman was in tears most of the night.
As hundreds of people filled the lodge to have dinner and show their support also through the silent auction, the people of ALS couldn't have imagined the hundreds of cars pouring through the drive-thru to get their dinner who were also supporting and couldn't fit in the building. Organizers here were told by the ALS people that the Gala Event held in Sacramento each year for ALS does not get as many people or raise as much money as last Thursday's event. Sacramento doesn't have the community support that this area proves time and time again. At least 650 tickets were sold in advance at $20 each which means at least $12,000 was raised in ticket sales alone. The Silent and Live Auctions of course brought the remainder of the money as people strove to support even more for the fundraiser.
Organizers report that a grand total of $34,000 was raised - an amazing amount for one event. Money raised because of the love people feel for Meredith and the need to do something to help.
Of course those of us from this area weren't as shocked as the ALS visitors because we are used to this community and the support shown whether it is for an individual in need or the cause for which they are afflicted such as ALS, Fighting Lou Gehrig's Disease. The theme for the 2011 Red Suspenders Day chosen by the Chamber of Commerce "Small Town With A Big Heart," comes to mind at functions such as this one.
The vast amount of friends of the Byrne family from far and wide gathered to raise money for research for ALS.For the rest of this story, please pick up a 1/23/13 edition of The Gridley Herald.
