  • After starting off the New Year with four losses, the Gridley Girls’ Basketball team bounced back last Thursday with a victory over the Colusa RedHawks.

Megan Anthony contributed 15 points for the Lady Bulldogs in a crushing 62-36 victory over the RedHawks. Ashtyn MacFarlane finished behind Anthony with 12 points.

Despite starting the second quarter down by three points, the girls redeemed themselves by outscoring the RedHawks 26-6 before the half.

“We started off slow but when the second quarter came around, we full court pressed them and outscored them 26-6. Megan Anthony and Ashtyn MacFarlane’s shots came alive,” said Coach Becca McCray.

Both teams scored 11 in the third quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs came out on fire in the fourth quarter and outscored Colusa 13-2, according to McCray.

The girls started off the New Year at the West Valley Tournament. Alexa Garcia was the leading scorer in a 68-37 loss to the hosting Eagles with 10 points, while MacFarlane had nine points. The girls played Lassen on the second day but fell by a score of 61-40. MacFarlane had nine points to lead the girls in scoring. Garcia finished with eight points. Elizabeth Osbourn picked up 11 points against the Orland Trojans in the seventh place game, but it was not enough as the Trojans edged Gridley by a final score of 40-35. Anthony, MacFarlane, Garcia and Madison Mardesich each had five points.

On Wednesday, Gridley took an early lead against the Willows Honkers but couldn’t hold onto it through the first quarter. The Honkers snatched the lead in the middle of the first and held onto it for the majority of the game. Gridley made a small rally in the middle of the second, but Willows maintained a 27-21 lead by the half. Gridley bounced back in the third quarter by outscoring the Honkers 12-5 and taking a 33-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Willows stole the lead shortly after the start of the fourth quarter, and the Lady Bulldogs were unable to take it back. Willows walked away with a narrow 50-46 victory.

Elizabeth Osbourn led Gridley scorers with 18 points against the Honkers, while Ashtyn MacFarlane added 12.
