  • As the sole person who has to determine which athlete deserves to receive the Gridley Herald's Athlete of the Week award, it's pretty difficult most of the time to decide who stood out the most when there are so many talented student-athletes among the various sports in the Biggs/Gridley/Live Oak area.
This week was especially difficult for one particular reason; this athlete didn't just stand out in the last game he played in…or the game before that…or even the game before that. I'm sure many of you have read article after article about Abrego leading the Bulldogs to victory, racking up the points and the rebounds.

Abrego moved from the Sacramento area his eighth grade year and attended Live Oak Middle School. He attended Live Oak High School his freshman and sophomore year where he played basketball, baseball and participated in track and field. Abrego transferred from Live Oak High School in the middle of last school year, but he was unable to play basketball for the bulldogs because of a torn meniscus. With overcoming an injury to that extent, Abrego has really shown his toughness, determination, and love for basketball—and of course, he's proven exactly how talented he really is.
