Freshman series dominated Thursday's Golden Globe nominations, as Nashville, The Newsroom, Smash, Veep and Girls all scored nods, while former three-time drama series champ Mad Men was unceremoniously dropped.

After four straight nominations and three wins, Mad Men was eschewed in favor of Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, defending champ Homeland and The Newsroom.

Jon Hamm did get a nod in drama lead actor against Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) and Damian Lewis (Homeland), matching the Screen Actors Guild Awards lineup from Wednesday.

In comedy/musical, reigning champ Modern Family will vie for a second straight series win against The Big Bang Theory, Episodes, Girls and Smash.

Globes hosts Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) both earned comedy/musical lead actress nods. Their competition includes Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Lena Dunham (Girls) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep).
