  • In honor of World AIDS Day, the Local HIV Prevention Implementation Group (LIG) would like to invite the community to participate in a Candlelight Vigil & Reception held Saturday, December
1st from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Trinity United Methodist Church.
World AIDS Day is a time of remembrance for those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS as well as a time to spread awareness and advocacy to help end the disease.
The program will begin with a welcome and live performance by the Doin’ it Justice Choir followed by guest speakers who will be sharing their expertise and knowledge of the HIV/AIDS disease. The candlelight walk will go through downtown and return to the church for closing remarks.
LIG Chairperson and the Caring Choices HIV Program Director, Deb Suderman, states that, “HIV/AIDS is here. It is in our communities large and small. It has not gone away. It is a disease of all ages, all races, and both genders”. Deb goes on to say, “There are 50,000 new cases of HIV diagnosed in the US every year and 1 of every 5 don’t know they have it”.
Current efforts to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS include a free testing project operated by Caring Choices and the Stonewall Alliance Center in Chico. Free HIV testing is available at the Stonewall Center on Tuesday’s beginning at 4:00pm and on the 1st Sat. of each month from 10am to 12:00 noon. HIV testing is also available through the Butte County Public Health Clinics by appointment for a fee and as a covered benefit for those who have Medi-Cal/CMSP or who are Family PACT eligible.
