  • Unlike most horror movies today, "The Possession" is actually worth seeing.
Although this movie claims to be based on a true story, I found no information available to prove such a statement to be true. This film is based on an article, "Jinx in a box", where someone claimed to have a box that contained an evil spirit, so he wanted to sell the box on Ebay. As far as I can tell "Evil Box" is where the similarities end. A long stretch for "based on a True story" if you ask me.
Regardless of the false advertising, "The Possession" is a rarity in horror movies today. The back story and good acting make us care about the family. Natasha Calis, in the staring role as Emily, is the key to making this movie work. She shows us her internal struggle, and plays the suffering role so well that the audience can't help but be drawn in. A rising star, she is and we will see much of her in future films.
But what about the all important question.... "Is it scary?" Yes. It is. However, like many movies today, the filmmakers  show too much in the trailers. But, more importantly, they felt it necessary to go overboard in a couple of places. Unfortunately that ends up looking tacky, and takes away from the film, rather than adding to it.
Although I feel some 13 year olds may be too sensitive for the material, this film is rated PG-13 for mature thematic material involving violence and disturbing sequences. I almost gave this film a 5 star rating, but because of the poor choices made toward the end of the film "The Possession gets 4 out of 5 stars from me. I loved it.
