  • The Live Oak Lions had started their season on a strong note: two wins on the road against non-league teams.  Now it was time to take their success back home to Live Oak.  They did just that in a dominating fashion, beating the Lindhurst Blazers 41-8 in their home opener to take them to a 3-0 season start.
The game started slow, but the Lions soon made their home fans proud when Romario Acosta threw a touchdown pass to Andrew Lopez in the final minute of the first quarter.  The Lions then brought out their kicker, Jose Medina, to kick the PAT.  This was a different strategy from previous games where the Lions would attempt the 2 point conversion after touchdowns.  Jose was on target all night, making 5 of 6 PATs.
From that point on, the Lions would take complete control of the game.  At the beginning of the 2nd quarter, Kirk Thao recovered a fumble the Blazers had made on the kickoff.  A few plays later, Cody Herbert rushed into the end zone for the touchdown.  The extra point by Jose put the Lions ahead 14-0.  The Lions kicked-off again and the Blazers fumbled it for a second straight time.  Brian Ramirez came up with the recovery to give the Lions a third straight possession.  I asked Lions coach Dan Johnson about the performance of his special teams unit.  “We didn’t do much different.  They forced a few fumbles and came ready to play.”  The Lions offense capitalized once again with a touchdown pass by Acosta to Tyler Raymond.  Later in the quarter, Raymond would rush the ball for another 6 points and the Lions would go into the locker room with a 28-0 lead.
The Lions came out in the 2nd half and played just as well.  Eli Selvidge made the only Lions’ interception on the night.  The interception would lead to a rushing touchdown by Haidyn Harned. For the rest of this story, please pick up a 9/12/12 edition of The Gridley Herald.
