Fraine Cox smashed three hits, including a double in Gridley's 10-0 win over Orland.

The Gridley Bulldogs softball team has had a rough season, and although one win can't salve the wounds suffered by the girls this year, a 10-0 five inning game over Butte View League foe Orland last Wednesday at least reduces the sting a little bit.
Gridley came into the season with high hopes, but haven't been able to find their way on the field this spring, and as the long season winds down, and a series finale underway against the sections front-runners Wheatland on-going, there seemed little to be excited for in the eyes of the Bulldogs. But then, along came the Orland Trojans. The same Orland squad which the Bulldogs had split two previous games early in the season, but the two teams couldn't complete their third game due to bad weather early in the season.
Both teams have struggled since facing each other. Orland has been on a 12-game losing skid since beating Gridley back in March, while the Bulldogs have won just once in eleven games since defeating the Trojans in the first game of the two teams BVL season.
Gridley didn't waste any time taking it to the Trojans, scoring two first inning runs to take a quick lead. Lead-off hitter Megan Anthony singled, stole second, and scored on a double by Fraine Cox. Cox was driven home on another double this time off the bat of first baseman Ashtyn Macfarlane.
The Bulldogs added two more in the second with the help of some shoddy Orland defense. Mady Mardesich walked with one out, and moved up to second after Sandra Dreesman reached first on a throwing error by the Trojan shortstop. Mardesich raced to third on the error, and when the right fielders throw to third was wild, Mardesich was able to scramble home while Dreesman made it to third. Dreesman scored later to help the Bulldogs lead build to 4-0. For the rest of this story, please pick up a 5/9/12 edition of The Gridley Herald. Or call us to subscribe today.
