As a pitcher all you can do is go out each start and perform to the best of your abilities, and hope it is enough. Sometimes you don't pitch your best and yet your team scores lots of runs and you win, and sometimes you throw great, but the offense can't get you any runs. For Gridley senior hurler Jordan McMartin, the latter was definitely the case in the Bulldogs 2-0 loss to the Wheatland Pirates in Butte View League action.
McMartin threw one of his best all-around games of the season, going the distance, allowing two runs (one earned) while scattering seven hits and striking out four in the six inning outing. The stats only tell a part of the game McMartin threw as he battled through five Gridley errors to keep the Pirates at bay, keeping his team within striking distance. Defense has been the biggest bugaboo throughout the Bulldog season, but despite the problems being suffered by the Gridley defense McMartin continued to make big pitches at big times throughout the ball game.
McMartin sometimes was his own worst enemy on the mound though. Forever a strike thrower, McMartin has a knack for throwing pitches too good when he gets ahead of the count, and Tuesday was no exception when twice he threw fat pitches on 0-2 counts which were turned into base hits. Neither one of these hits ended up costing him this time, but his ability to keep fighting and making big pitches got him through on this day.
Scoring runs ended up being the biggest problem for the Bulldogs, which has rarely been the case all season. While Gridley was limited to only four hits against Wheatland starter Nolan West, Gridley had opportunities to score, but couldn't get the big hit or complete plays which could have led to runs. Three times Gridley got runners to third base against West, but they all came with two out. All three times, the Bulldogs couldn't get the big hit to keep the inning going.
