  • Lela Asp, 98, of Yuba City, passed away March 20, 2012 at Rideout Memorial Hospital, in Marysville.

    Lela was born on November 2, 1913 in Tensed, Idaho. She was the youngest of 12 children born to George and Mary Catherine Billingsley. She moved to California from the state of Washington and settled in Gridley in her early twenties. She resided in Gridley for 50 years. It was here that she met and married Everett H. Spratling in 1938. She was the head cook for the Gridley School District for many years and a wonderful homemaker. Her home was always open to family and friends.

    In 1984, she married Gordon Asp and they traveled throughout much of the United States. They resided in Corvallis, Oregon and Yuma, Arizona.

    Lela moved to Yuba City in 2004 to be near her family. She was a member of the Widowed Persons Association, the Women of the Moose and Crossroads Community Church. She was an independent lady with a love for life. She loved to dance, travel, and be with people.

    Lela is survived by her daughter Lavaune Bell, of Yuba City; grandson Michael Bell and his wife, Kara, of Yuba City; great-grandchildren Katelyn and Wyatt, of Yuba City.

    She was preceded in death by husbands Everett and Gordon, her parents and all of her siblings.

    A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at 11 a.m., at Crossroads Community Church, in Yuba City, with Pastor Jim Clark officiating.
