Trevor Anthony follows through after connecting on one of his three hits for the Bulldogs.
The field was still a bit damp Tuesday afternoon at Gridley High School. While the weather was nice enough, the clouds hanging in the air served as a reminder of the rains of the past 10 days. Fortunately the rain left town for a few days allowing the Gridley Bulldogs baseball team the opportunity to play a game. It had been nine days since Gridley had taken the field, and now they were coming into the Butte View League opener against the visiting Orland Trojans.
The Bulldogs didn't waste any time, scoring three runs in the first and three more in the fifth to nail down a 6-2 victory over the Trojans in the first of three games the two teams will play this week in the new format set up by the BVL this season. The new format will have each team playing three games in a week against each team, so teams with deep pitching staffs should have an advantage, because a single pitcher can't throw more than nine innings in a single week.
Gridley starting pitcher Jordan McMartin didn't waste any time in the top of the first, retiring the Trojans in order in the top on just seven pitches. Three ground balls got the Bulldogs into the dugout quickly, and gave the offense a chance to make some noise.
The Bulldogs then waited out Orland's starter, as lead-off hitter Brad Props took first when he was hit by a pitch. Number two hitter Johnathan Villapania walked, and three hitter Trevor Anthony singled to load the bases, bringing up McMartin with a chance to do some major damage. Martin didn't crush the ball, but his ground ball to second base brought home Props, and moved the runners up to second and third.
After a strikeout and another walk, Gridley was in danger of allowing the Trojans to escape the inning with only one run, but first baseman Mark McConnell smashed a grounder into the hole between the first and second basemen for a single, driving in two more Gridley runs. McConnell's hit allowed McMartin some breathing room, and the senior righty knew what to do. For the full story pick up a 3/23/12 edition of The Gridley Herald.
