A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 4:00 P.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gridley for Leonard Russell Henbury, 89 of Oroville, California.  He passed away peacefully Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Biggs-Gridley Hospital.

Leonard Russell Henbury, was born November 8, 1919, in Kobe, Japan.  A very loyal and staunch British subject, Len was a gentle, simple man who was a child hood friend to each generation of the Desmond, Hughes, Gaskins, and Henbury families.

Len was born and raised in Japan, and with his mother and sister fled from there in 1940, seeking political asylum in the USA on one of the last boats to leave Japan prior to Pearl Harbor.  He lived with his mother Lillian Henbury and sister Edna Henbury Desmond and worked at the Stokeley cannery in Santa Cruz.  After the war, the Henbury family was reunited in San Francisco: His brother Thomas Henbury was released from a Japanese prisoner of war camp and his father Thomas J. Henbury was able to leave Australia, where he had been stranded over the duration of the war.

After the death of his mother and father, Len moved to Fresno, California, where he was cared for by his sister Edna and brother-in-law Joe Desmond.  He worked for many years in restaurants owned by the Desmond family.

Since 1997, Len has lived in Gridley with his niece Margaret and Joe Hughes as well as in Santa Cruz.

Len loved travel, cracking out walnuts, watching wrestling, constantly defeating others at his favorite go-ban game, and playing a game of cards.  Especially, though, he loved to be with his nieces and nephews and their friends through three generations.

Leonard is preceded by his parents, Lillian and Thomas Henbury, his brother and sister-in-law Tom and Rita Henbury, and his sister and brother-in-law Edna and Joseph Desmond.

He is survived by niece Margaret Desmond Hughes (Joe; niece Joan Desmond Gaskins (Jim) nephew Thomas Henbury; niece Barbara Henbury Pope (Michael); Rhoda Henbury Owens; Laurie Henbury Edmondson (Jeff).  Great nieces include Elise and Amy Hughes, Anne and Kate Gaskins, Melanie Nannizzi, Elise and Shannon Edmondson, and Kirsten Owens.  Great nephews include Bernie (Sonya) and Philip Hughes, Jamie D. Gaskins, Benjamin Owens, the late Clifford Owens, and many great-great nieces and nephews.

A Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 30, 3009 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Gridley-Block Funeral Chapel.

A Rosary will be recited at Gridley-Block Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 7:00 P.M.

Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Santa Cruz on Friday, October 2, 2009 at 2:00 P.M.

Father Miguel Silva of Sacred Heart Catholic Church will officiate at the services.

The family particularly wishes to thank Leonard’s caregivers in his final days: Lourdes Acevedo and family, Maria Rubio, Ron and Greg Baker, and Bernie and Philip Hughes.  In addition, the nurses, doctors, and staff at Biggs-Gridley Hospital gave him genuine compassion and care over his last several years.  This loving service will not be forgotten.

Arrangements are entrusted to Gridley-Block Funeral Chapel.
