It was another impressive performance for the J.V. Bulldogs, who improved to 3-0 after beating Live Oak 20-0 Friday night.

Gridley scored on their opening drive to set the tone for the day, finding room to run to their right side and using Ed Ruiz, Jordan McMartin and Trevor Anthony to march down the field. Live Oak's Tyler Raymond had a sack that forced the Bulldogs into a 4th-and-13, but Gridley converted with a 14-yard pass from Brad Props to Kevin Mattos.

Ruiz finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 7-0.

A mistake on a punt for Live Oak set Gridley up at the Live Oak six-yard line and Ruiz pushed his way through for the touchdown on the first play, giving Gridley a 14-0 lead, which they took into halftime.

The Lions started their next drive in a hole, when a penalty on the return moved the ball back to their own 12-yard line. A quick screen to Justyn Harned picked up about 15 yards, but the drive stalled there. The Lions held Gridley out of the endzone for the rest of the half to stay within two scores.

Live Oak's first possession of the second half ended with a blocked punt that Gridley recovered at the Lions 27. They failed to take advantage of the mistake when Tony Montes intercepted a pass and returned it to the 31.

The smothering Gridley defense pushed them back with sacks and tackles in the backfield and Live Oak lost 10 yards on a three-and-out.

Mattos returned the punt to the Live Oak 39-yard line and a horse collar penalty moved the ball to the 24. Ruiz hit a big hole up the middle for nine yards, and again for another seven. Two more Ruiz runs and he went untouched for a touchdown and a 20-0 lead.

Live Oak held Gridley out of the endzone for the remainder of the third and fourth quarters, but couldn't manage to score themselves. On Gridley's first drive of the fourth quarter, Jesse Duarte cut in front of a streaking Mattos to make a leaping catch and manage to keep his feet in bounds. The turnover wouldn't lead to points, however, and Gridley held on to the shutout win.
